Cervical insufficiency

16.07.2022

Cervical insufficiency (also called incompetent cervix) can occur during pregnancy and lead to pregnancy loss.

The topic is explained by the head of the Department of Pregnancy Pathology of Maternity Clinic of MC Erebouni Dr. Edita Gharibyan.

There is an amniotic fluid leakage without symptoms and pain, which can lead to miscarriages or premature birth.

The reasons are different: most often, the problem occurs in a woman who has been pregnant two or more times,or when a woman notes a traumatic birth or abortion.

In woman who is pregnant for the first time, cervical insufficiency is more associated with hormonal disorders. The diagnosis is made using intravaginal ultrasound when measuring the length of the cervix. If it is less than 2.5 cm, incompetent cervix is diagnosed and requires immediate treatment.

Most often, a surgical treatment option is used - suturing the cervix. Another option is the use of obstetrical pessary.
