Erebuni Medical Center Leading the Way in Stroke Treatment Program

Since its launch on February 1, 2019, the State Stroke Treatment Program at Erebuni Medical Center has emerged as a cornerstone in healthcare, significantly reducing mortality rates and cases of disability. Despite the participation of many other centers in the State Stroke Treatment Program, Erebuni Medical Center remains the foremost provider of acute stroke care, particularly for ischemic stroke patients.

To date, Erebuni Medical Center has provided medical care to 1,800 patients under this program, representing 65% of beneficiaries across the country. This achievement reflects extensive preparation spanning over a decade, including collaboration with leading stroke centers worldwide and the dedication of Armenian specialists such as Mikael Skon, Vigen Babikyan, and Mikael Grigoryan, alongside Harutyun Kushkyan.

Pioneering procedures like thrombolysis in 2014 and thrombectomy in 2016 highlight Erebuni Medical Center's commitment to innovation in stroke care. The center stands out not only for its clinical expertise but also for its advanced technical equipment, notably the Artis icono angiograph by Siemens Healthineers, the sole unit of its kind in the region.

Under the leadership of David Sahakyan, head of the cerebrovascular neurosurgery service, Erebuni Medical Center conducts intricate interventions while serving as a regional training hub for neurosurgeons and interventional neurologists from various countries.

Nune Yeghiazaryan, head of the neurology department, leads the stroke treatment team in continuous scientific, educational, and organizational endeavors. These efforts include annual spring stroke schools, Stroke Fellowship programs, and advanced training courses for neurologists, nurturing emerging Stroke Centers.

Furthermore, the success of Erebuni Medical Center's Stroke Center has paved the way for the establishment of similar centers in Gyumri and the upcoming launch in Vanadzor. Telestroke services in Vanadzor will extend life-saving interventions to residents in remote areas, further advancing stroke care accessibility.
