Preparation for Radioiodine Therapy
Radioiodine therapy is performed:
- 4–5 weeks after surgery
- 3–4 weeks after discontinuation of L-thyroxine
- Following an electrocardiogram (ECG) conducted 3 days prior to therapy
- After a computed tomography (CT) scan with contrast (to be completed 2–3 months before therapy)
It is necessary to discontinue iodine-containing medications and iodine-rich foods prior to treatment.
Pregnancy should be avoided.
Low-Iodine Diet (Permitted Foods)
The following foods are allowed in limited iodine content:
- All types of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables
- Nuts
- Meat (chicken, beef, turkey)
- Dairy products
- Small amounts of egg whites
- Bread, corn, rice, vermicelli, crackers
- Coffee, cocoa, sugar, honey
- Non-alcoholic beverages that do not contain red coloring
Prohibited Foods
- Iodized or sea salt
- Seafood and seaweed
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Soy products and legumes
- Chocolate (especially milk chocolate)
- Beverages containing red coloring
- Mineral water
Upon Hospital Admission
Patients should bring clothing and personal items sufficient for a 3-day stay, including:
- Underwear and clothing
- Slippers
- Towels (bath and face)
- Bed linen (to remain at the hospital)
Personal items such as books, mobile phones, and laptops are permitted.
Personal hygiene products (soap, shampoo) are provided by the hospital; however, patients may bring their own if preferred.
Important Information After Discharge
- Limit contact with the public and family members.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 1–1.5 meters from others and avoid prolonged stays in enclosed spaces.
- Avoid close contact with children and pregnant women for 21 days.
- After discharge, you may travel home by private vehicle; however, the use of public transportation is prohibited for 10 days.
- Upon discharge, the physician will provide official documentation confirming receipt of radiation therapy, which may be required when crossing borders.
