A 54- years -old patient Kh. D., in 04.08.2017 has admitted to MC Erebouni with complaints of severe, paroxysmal headaches in the left side of the head , which is not amenable to drug treatment.
The patient suffers from migraine for more than 40 years, and has tried almost all known painkillers, but in recent months has taken strong painkillers- triptans, which are the last hope in this category of patients. After consultation with vascular surgeon - Mesrop Shatakhyan, MD and thorough diagnosis, it was found out, that the cause of these headaches is the compression of auriculotemporal nerve by the superficial temporal artery, which is the branch of the external carotid artery. Only surgical treatment is possible for this pathology, which was recommended to the patient.
On the same day a surgical team( surgeons Shatakhyan M.P., Arzumanyan A.R., anesthesiologist Muradyan A.R.) performed intervention on dissection and intersection throughout the temporal artery and full decompression of auriculotemporal nerve( see fig.).

The patient was extubated on the operating table , he had no headaches, and 4 hours after the surgery the patient was discharged.
The patient still has no headaches to this day, which he used to worry about every day.
According to Dr. M.P. Shatakhyan, MD migraine surgery has been a well-established gold standard in USA and Europe for 15 years, and we are happy , that today we are able to use this highly effective method of treatment for our patients.
In Armenia about 15 % of people are susceptible to migraine of varying degrees of severity and with the resistance of drug treatment , it is the surgery, that gives the chance for a cure. According to international data, the results of surgical treatment have a positive effect in more , than in 80% of cases.
At present MC Erebouni is performing both diagnosis and surgical treatment of this severe pathology.
