Meeting with the Head of the radiology service of the National Center of Oncology of Belarus Valentin Dzyuban

The Head of the radiology service of the National Center of Oncology of Belarus Valentin Dzyuban for several days conducts diagnostic testing by computed tomography in the Erebouni medical center. We had talked with Valentine Dzyuban about the features and benefits of computed tomography and achievements in this field over the past years.

- Could you please list main features of computed tomography comparing with other diagnostic methods?

-The advantage of computer tomography is that it provides comprehensive anatomical information about the whole human organism, from head to feet. Another advantage is the rapid, within seconds, image acquisition that helps to organize the treatment right away, whereby it becomes possible to avoid potential complications and increase the effectiveness of provided treatment. There are cases, when even the seconds can play a role in saving the patient’s life. Information on the anatomical structures of the organism’s organ systems is very clear on CT images. This enabling rapid diagnostics in case of pathology.

- In cases of which diseases it is necessary to pass the computed tomography?

- It is difficult to unequivocally answer to your question. To diagnose a stroke in the case of disorders of the brain blood circulation, computed tomography is a must. Computed tomography is indispensable also in cases of pulmonary artery thromboembolism, injuries, and some oncologic diseases. There are few areas in medicine where computed tomography is of secondary importance or not needed at all. The Head of the radiology service of the National Center of Oncology of Belarus Valentin Dzyuban

- What achievements have been registered in the field of computed tomography over the past years?

-The history of the existence of the computed topography is not very long. In 1973, Raymon Damadyan introduced a new diagnostic electrical device - computed tomography. Since 1975, thanks to CT alongside with cancer diagnosis it also became possible to checkup the entire human organism. The period of development of computed tomography started. Over the past years a spiral CT scanner was invented, which provided an opportunity to examine the body continuously. Then the several CT scanners have been invented thanks to which the images from computed tomography have become clearer and the performance time shortened. Today the technical capabilities make it possible to examine the entire human body during 2-3 seconds.

- In all over the world patients are concerned about the problem of radiation during CT. What progress has been achieved in this matter?

- Every fifth citizen of USA every year passes computed tomography. If the number of people receiving medical exposure (the main source of medical exposure is computed tomography) will increase, then after 20 years in the USA every 50 cases of oncologic diseases will be caused by medical exposure. In all over the world in the basis of the development of computed tomography lays a question of reducing the dose of radiation. The main achievement of recent years is the reduction of radiation level, which compared to the 70s, had declined by approximately 50%.

- While in Armenia, do you have noticed the main complaints of patients undergoing the computed tomography?

- In various medical institutions the patients appeals with a various complaints. In the Erebouni medical center the study of the central nervous system, the brain, the brain vessels are dominated. Like worldwide the next study by importance is chest and lungs studies.

- Please tell us about the most impressive cases in your practice.

- The most impressive cases in my medical practice as an oncologist are the cessation of the development or disappearance of the tumors without any treatment or intervention. However, these are single cases, but they prove that the human body is unpredictable and has unlimited possibilities.
