Radioactive iodine therapy for thyroid cancer

27.01.2022

Since 2019, the European Center of Nuclear Medicine has been operating in MC Erebouni. Given the fact that thyroid diseases are very common in Armenia, a European Center for Nuclear Medicine was opened at MC Erebouni. In most cases, thyroid diseases are indicated by treatment with radioactive iodine. Before the opening of the center, patients had to receive this treatment outside the republic. A new center has been opened in MC Erebouni precisely for this purpose, so that our patients have the opportunity to receive high-quality treatment in Armenia. Today, most of the patients in need of iodine therapy are treated in MC Erebouni. The center runs modern equipment, including a gamma camera (SPECT), manufactured by German SIEMENS company, which is the latest diagnostic device used in nuclear medicine worldwide. From the moment of taking the drug, the patient is isolated in specially equipped, comfortable, safe wards. The course of iodine therapy lasts three days. On the 3rd day, the patient undergoes a special diagnostic examination to determine the amount of accumulation of radioactive iodine in the body. Since the opening of the Center, more than 560 patients have received treatment with radioactive iodine so far.
