The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of the Maternity Clinic provides anesthesia and resuscitation of pregnant women, women in labor and gynecological patients routinely and as a matter of urgency, around the clock, throughout the territory of Armenia. In the department, according to indications, inhalation, epidural, intravenous, facemask anesthesia is used. The doctors of the department use all modern methods of local, general and regional anesthesia (nitric oxide, inhalation anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia).
To provide the anesthesia, contemporary anesthetic drugs, high quality anesthesia and respiratory equipment and monitoring systems are used at the Department. The choice of anesthesia is carried out individually for each pregnant woman by an anesthesiologist jointly with the obstetrician-gynecologist that provides childbirth. During childbirth epidural anesthesia is widely used.
All types of anesthesia and early postoperative period in the department are carried out under the control of the following indexes: heart rate, electrocardiogram, respiratory rate, blood pressure.
The Department performs about 6000 anesthesia per year, including 2500 during gynecological surgeries and cesarean sections, 2400 in small interventions and 1400 labor analgesia. In the intensive care unit they are examined and get treatment for more than 3000 postoperative patients per year. From year to year, the number of women in labor who need epidural anesthesia, which provides comfort and painless childbirth, is increasing.
Cesarean section is performed under regional anesthesia, which allows women to not experience any pain during childbirth. For intraoperative monitoring of body functions the department uses the most modern systems that allow the continuous measurement of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and electrocardiogram, and determine the composition of exhaled and inhaled gases.
The department in its activity uses the methods of general anesthesia, intravenous anesthesia, spinal anesthesia, epidural, combined epidural-spinal anesthesia, intravenous anesthesia with a laryngeal mask. The main focus of the department is to provide high-quality, safe anesthesia to patients and women in labor.
